Advancing Personalised Prevention for Chronic Inflammatory Diseases

Advancing Personalised Prevention for Chronic Inflammatory Diseases

At a Glance

  • Developing innovative tools for early identification and personalised prevention of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to enable timely interventions
  • Applying a multidimensional approach by integrating and exploring omics data, digital health monitoring tools, nutritional interventions and patient-reported outcomes to optimise disease management
  • Advancing patient-focused research through active collaboration to empower people living with RA and IBD, improve health outcomes and reduce disease challenges

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are chronic inflammatory diseases that greatly influence the quality of life of those affected. To maximise patient outcomes, PerPrev-CID aims to advance early prediction and prevention, analysing multidimensional patient data – including molecular, clinical and lifestyle – and integrating home-based monitoring and self-sampling solutions. The project also focuses on nutritional interventions targeting the intestines to evaluate their impact on immune and microbiome health, alongside strong patient involvement in research. By advancing personalised preventive approaches, PerPrev-CID seeks to improve clinical outcomes, enhance quality of life, and reduce the burden of these diseases across Europe.

Understanding early disease trajectories for better patient outcomes

Millions of people worldwide are affected by chronic inflammatory diseases (CIDs), which place a significant strain on both patients and healthcare systems. The ongoing inflammation caused by these conditions can lead to organ damage, tissue changes, and a significant decline in quality of life. Despite their prevalence, early detection remains a major challenge due to a lack of reliable markers that signal disease onset or progression, resulting in delayed diagnosis, poorer patient outcomes and increased healthcare expenses. PerPrev-CID aims to close this gap by developing innovative tools and setting new standards for early molecular diagnosis that enable intervention before significant disease progression. By tackling this unmet need, the project aims to shift the focus from reactive treatment to proactive prevention, ultimately transforming how RA and IBD are managed and reducing their long-term impact on individuals and healthcare systems.

A holistic approach to personalised prevention

PerPrev-CID takes an innovative, patient-centred approach to preventing chronic inflammatory diseases (CIDs). By integrating molecular insights, digital health monitoring, nutrition, and explainable artificial intelligence for advanced data analysis, the project aims to enable timely, targeted interventions. To explore multi-Omics and clinical phenotypes from people living with and at risk of RA and IBD, blood and stool is collected using certified minimally invasive self-sampling kits. At the same time, patients use digital tools such as e-diaries and fitness apps to continuously report on their sleep, pain, stress, and general wellbeing. Building on this rich dataset, a nutritional intervention will explore whether nicotinamide intake can reduce inflammation, improve gut health, and restore microbiome balance. Advanced AI methods, including swarm learning and explainable models, allow secure, federated data analysis across sites. Crucially, PerPrev-CID involves a variety of stakeholders, including patients, health care professionals, and policymakers to ensure ethical, legal, and practical considerations guide the development of personalised prevention strategies.
