AIDAVA Concludes Four Years of Research on Reusable Health Data

After four years of research and development, the EU-funded AIDAVA project has concluded, demonstrating how AI-assisted data curation could help hospitals prepare health data once and reuse it for different clinical, research and reporting purposes.

As Europe prepares for the implementation of the European Health Data Space (EHDS), healthcare providers face a major challenge: clinical data are often fragmented across different systems and formats and need to be repeatedly prepared for different purposes. AIDAVA explored an alternative approach based on the principle “curate once, use many times”.

The project developed an AI-powered Data Curation and Publishing Virtual Assistant that cleans, structures and validates clinical data to create a reusable digital representation of a patient record. Tested at four hospitals in Estonia, Austria and the Netherlands, the approach enabled curated data to be reused for different purposes, including cross-border patient summaries, research and clinical decision support. A scenario-based economic analysis conducted by the consortium further indicated the potential of this approach to substantially reduce the costs associated with preparing health data for reuse. At the same time, the project showed that human expertise remains important for difficult or ambiguous cases, positioning AI as a tool to support and streamline data curation rather than replace human involvement.

Contributing to Europe's digital health transformation

AIDAVA closely aligns with the Group's Health Innovation Ecosystem’s strategic focus on Data-Driven & Digital Health Innovation, combining artificial intelligence, health data interoperability and practical solutions for making health data more accessible and reusable.

EURICE and RISE contributed to AIDAVA over the course of the project, supporting its implementation and helping to advance the project's results and their relevance for the evolving European health data landscape. Through projects such as AIDAVA, the EURICE Group contributes to collaborative European research and innovation that connects technological development with the structures and requirements needed for its future uptake and impact.
